Humanitarian crises make headlines every day. Images of tragic events show tears, sorrow, hunger, despair, isolation, separation and hardship. We often feel helpless when we see or hear reports about crises, pandemics, acts of violence, armed conflicts and natural disasters.

This digital installation invites you to take some time to familiarise yourself with displacement. A topic that evokes difficult reflections, questions and reactions. Stress, confusion and despair often influence dramatic decisions and situations: I have to flee. What do I take with me? When will I be able to return home? What items are essential? Fear and despair dominate these decisive moments. In many cases, there is no right answer.

How can I get involved?

Do you want to do something for displaced persons here in Switzerland or abroad? Refugees often find it difficult to get settled in Switzerland, learn the language, get used to the Swiss way of life and find a job. Your support can smoothen the process of integration.

Aid organisations, such as the Swiss Refugee Council, the Red Cross, Swiss Interchurch Aid (HEKS) and Helvetas, as well as asylum organisations working in the field of migration and integration, such as the Asylum Organisation Zurich (AOZ) and the ORS Service AG, offer many opportunities to get involved:

  • Volunteer for a mentoring project to support and guide temporarily admitted persons and recognised refugees to find a job.
  • Help impart basic language skills to asylum seekers or assist refugees in improving their already acquired German skills in a relaxed environment.
  • Offer a home and family to a young, unaccompanied refugee.
  • Organise a sports event for asylum seekers and refugees or help out at a weekly midday meal programme.
  • Donate money, clothes or other items
  • Get involved locally and, depending on your aptitude and the profiles needed, join the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA), Switzerland’s pool of relief workers that respond to humanitarian crises.
